Frequently Asked Questions
When should photographers charge a travel fee?
Beyond a free radius of 20–30 miles, charge the IRS mileage rate (~$0.67/mile in 2024) or a flat zone fee. Past ~90 minutes each way, bill travel time at half your hourly rate too.
How do I price destination shoots?
Actual costs (flights, lodging, per diem, gear transport) + travel days at a day rate (often 50% of shoot day rate) + the shoot itself. Never eat travel costs to "win" a destination job.
Should the travel fee be in the package or itemized?
Local zone baked in, distance itemized. Transparent line items are easier to defend than a mysteriously bigger package price — and clients self-filter by distance.
